Have you been a permanent resident for multiple years now and are looking to become a Canadian Citizen? This can be an exciting but overwhelming time. To ensure you are eligible to apply for citizenship, you must meet the following basic criteria.
1. Be a permanent resident
You must have valid permanent resident status in Canada and not be under a removal order or have any unfulfilled conditions related to your PR status.
2. Have enough physical presence or time lived in Canada
You must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1095 days (3 years) during your 5-year eligibility period. A minimum of 730 of these days must be spent as a permanent resident. To ensure you meet the physical presence requirements, it is best to use the online calculator.
3. Have filed income taxes in Canada, if needed
If required, you must have filed your income taxes in Canada for at least three years within your five-year eligibility period. This helps show your connection to Canada and supports your overall Canadian citizenship application.
4. Prove your language skills (ages 18 to 54 only)
English and French are Canada’s two official languages. The day on which you sign your application, if you are between the ages of 18 and 54, you must show that you have an adequate knowledge of English or French. The speaking and listening skills are equivalent to CLB 4 for English and French.
5. Pass the citizenship test (adults 18 to 54 only)
If you’re between 18 and 54 years old on the day you sign your application, you must take the citizenship test.
6. Not be under a prohibition
Ensure you are not under any prohibition. A prohibition usually results from criminal and security reasons.
7. Take the Oath of Citizenship
You must be at least 18 years old, and your citizenship application must have been approved.
