Can International Students Stay in Canada After Graduation?

International students often wonder what options they have to remain in Canada after completing their studies. There are two main pathways available: obtaining a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) or applying for permanent residence.

1. Post-Graduation Work Permit

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is the most common and straightforward route for international applicants with student visas who want to stay and work in Canada after graduation.

Who Can Apply for a PGWP?

You may be eligible for a PGWP if you meet the following requirements:

  • You completed a program at a PGWP-eligible Designated Learning Institution, and the program was at least 8 months long (or 900 hours in Quebec).
  • You maintained full-time student status during each semester, except your final semester, where part-time studies are allowed.
  • You apply within 180 days of receiving written confirmation that you completed your program.
  • Your study permit was valid at some point within the 180-day period before submitting your PGWP application.
  • You hold a valid passport at the time you apply.

If you meet these conditions, you can apply for a PGWP and begin gaining Canadian work experience after graduation.

How Long is the Post-Graduate Work Permit Valid?

The length of your PGWP depends on the program you completed.

Master’s degree programs

  • If your master’s program was at least 8 months (or 900 hours in Quebec), you may receive a 3-year PGWP.

All other eligible programs

  • Programs 8 months to less than 2 years: PGWP validity may be the same as the program length.
  • Programs 2 years or more: PGWP may be valid for 3 years.

Multiple programs

  • You may combine the length of two or more programs if each is at least 8 months and PGWP-eligible.
  • You cannot receive a second PGWP if you already obtained one from a previous program.

2. Permanent Residence

Another option for staying in Canada after graduation is to apply for permanent residence. Common pathways include:

  • Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

The CEC class requires Canadian work experience, which many graduates gain through the PGWP.
